Alpha King’s Wolfless Mate by Scarlett Higgins

Chapter 22

Chapter 22 Chapter 22 Helen, what happened?” Alpha Al asked. “What are you talking about?” Jeremy echoed. He hugged her close and k*ssed the top of her head. My stomach lurched. Helen was admitting her deceit and Jeremy was still being supportive. It made me sick, literally. “I got a  letter from the envoy. I’m the one that received it. The letter demanded that I turn my wolf over to Nora. How could I part with her, though? I couldn’t give her up.” Helen cried, burying her face in Jeremy’s chest, I scoffed and shook my head. She was still trying to play the victim! “I tried to explain to the envoy. I told him the situation but he wouldn’t listen!” Helen continued to wail. “It isn’t his job to listen, only to ensure the message is delivered. He did his job, but it seems you didn’t do yours,” Blake pointed out. “Why would you hide those messages from your Alpha and your fiance?” “The envoy was mean. You made demands as my king. What was I supposed to do?” she asked desperately. “Helen, why didn’t you come to me? If there were letters, I should have known about them,” Jeremy said, his eyes flickering with confusion. Finally! Was he going to start seeing her for the lar she was? “What happened to the letters” Blake pressed, his voice sharp and demanding “1. I got r–rid of them,” Helen admitted, looking down. “Why” Jeremy asked Helen hiccuped and looked into Jeremy’s eyes I saw how he softened when she looked at him. He really would believe whatever lies she spuri The envoy left and I didn’t see him again. Lif I’d k sobbed, stuttering as she tried to explain. own if Ed known I’d cause this much 1–trouble.” Helen wheezed and “Honey, it’s okay Just tell us everything Jeremy urged running his fingers through Helen’s hair. He pulled to look into her eyes Hlooked up at Blake It soundeel like Helen was going to come up with some new excuse and I was worried she would convince Jeremy and Alpha Al, again Blake touched my cheek comfortingly and shook his head, silently telling me not to worry I nodded and stayed close to him. He was keeping me strong through this. If I hadn’t known he was going to back me up. I I would have been able to face Jeremy on my owIL I was strong, but I wasn’t stupid enough alk into enue full of people that saw me as an enemy. “I didn’t mean to make a mess of things I just. I just I’d rather die than see our pack hurt because of me.” Helen said to Jeremy, leaning against him again and crying more. I had to hand it to her, she was good at crying fake tears. Helen sniffled and turned to Blake. She stepped away from Jeremy Jeremy grabbed a hold of her and kept his arms around her protectively. “Your majesty, whether you believe me or not, I didn’t steal anyone’s wolf!” Helen insisted, giving Blake her biggest, pleading eyes I glanced at Blake.

His l*ps were drawn, eyes open wide. He wasn’t buying her story. He just looked at her blankly. My heart thumped harder in my chest. It was nice to know that he was going to go on believing me, regardless of what Helen tried to say or do “You’re my king, so if you demand that I give Nora my wolf…” Helen sighed and looked at Jeremy, then at Blake Tm willing to use my life to prove my moocence!” “No, Helen, you don’t need to do that,” Jeremy said, hugging her tighter.. She looked desperate. “You’re going to offer your life rather than admit your lie?” Blake asked. “Why won’t you believe me?” Helen cried, pointing at Blake. “Everyone else does.” “Yes, magic can have that effect on others. Fortunately, I have my wife and I trust her and believe her,” Blake said, turning back to me with a glowing smile. I smiled back, but then his attention was gone a moment later. “Are you going to return Nora’s wolf or forfeit your life?” Blake asked. Jeremy and Al gasped. I saw fear glow in Helen’s eves It was extreme, but Blake and I had discussed extremes to force Helen to tell the truth. “No!” Helen cried. She grabbed a knife from the belt of the nearest royal soldier. The soldiers got ready to attack her if she lunged but Helen pressed the knife to her own heart. “I’ll die before I give up my wolf!” she screamed, the knife pointed at her heart. “Helen, don’t!” Jeremy shouted Jumping forward, Jeremy grabbed her wrist and pulled the knife away. He threw it into the bushes and far out of reach. “What are you doing?” he shouted, shaking her in fear and anger. Helen let out a loud sob. Tears burst from her eyes and she cried and wailed, all words lost in her tears. “Shh, shh, baby, I’ve got you,” Jeremy said, hugging Helen to hum Her crying tapered off and she collapsed against Jeremy. “1. I think she fainted.” Jeremy murmured, k*ssing her head. What a show! If Helen hadn’t fainted, I probably would have started clapping.  I’d been so sure she’d be cornered and confess. Instead, she went to a farther extreme and she’d practically cut herself. And she still hadn’t admitted to her lies! My knees trembled and my b*dy sagged. I slumped against Blake, all my adrenaline and courage draining away. “I’m tired. Can we go home?” I muttered into Blake’s shoulder. Blake hugged me warmly and shot a look at Jeremy. “You and your fiance have one day to give me a satisfying answer,” he hissed before guiding me away. I sat at my vanity, brushing my hair. The bracelet Jeremy had given me stuck out of my jewelry box. I reached over and brushed my fingers across it. I wasn’t sure if Blake would allow me to be part of the negotiations. I didn’t even know what I would say if I saw Jeremy again. It had been nearly 24 hours since Blake demanded an answer. We hadn’t heard from Jeremy or Alpha Al yet.
