Chapter 5

Chapter 5 Gwyneth Is Terrified

Darron rescued Gwyneth from Raynard’s office because he had something to report to him.

Through the glass window, Raynard watched the timid assistant transform into a lively girl outside with a smile.

Darron looked in the direction of Raynard’s gaze and saw Gwyneth frantically searching her bag for something.

He thought, “She’s as careless as…always.”

Darron turned and handed Raynard an envelope. “It’s proved that Mrs. Fletcher ordered someone to drag you that night.”

He heard the buzzing of a phone when he finished.

Darron looked down and saw a phone with a cute case. Obviously, it wasn’t Raynard’s phone.

He immediately knew what Gwyneth was searching for outside.

Gwyneth wanted to text Janine to tell her she was done there. Yet, she left her phone in Raynard’s office.

As awkward as she felt, she had to go into his office again for her phone.

When she reached the door of the office, she heard Raynard say coldly, “What about that woman?”

Her hand went still in mid-air.

They were still looking for that woman?!

Darron said, “I’m afraid that the woman is someone Mrs. Fletcher determined to let you marry. She must have hidden that woman.”

“Someone working for her? Great.”

Raynard’s tone became darker.

In the next second, she heard Raynard’s chilling order. “Find the woman within this month and get rid of anyone who stands in your way.”

“Yes.”

Darron’s answer was equally scary.

Gwyneth’s face was as pale as a sheet at this point. Nobody understood what “get rid of” meant more than her.

Judging from the gruesome conversation, Gwyneth grew more certain that once Raynard discovered the truth, she would be doomed.

Darron walked out of the office and saw Gwyneth. “What’s wrong, Ms. Maynard?”

“Hello, Mr. Conner.”

Gwyneth hid her emotions and greeted Darron humbly.

Her thoughts were all over the place.

Darron looked at her pale face and asked, “Are you ill? Why is your face so pale?”

“I caught a cold,” Gwyneth lied nervously.

Darron nodded and told Gwyneth to go to a doctor before leaving.

The president’s office’s door was open, so Gwyneth immediately noticed her phone on the desk.

She walked inside with wobbly legs. “Excuse me, Mr. Fletcher. I left my phone here.”

She reached for her phone.

Raynard beat her to it and tapped on it before tossing it back to Gwyneth, who was confused by his actions.

He asked, “Ms. Maynard, is there anything you need to tell me?”

Gwyneth was terrified at the beginning. When she heard Raynard’s question, her heart almost jumped out of her throat.

Not to mention that she saw Janine’s text on the screen. “What’s taking you so long? Did Mr. Fletcher catch you…”

The rest of the sentence was invisible due to the saturation of the screen.

However, it was enough to make Gwyneth’s mind go completely blank.

Her pupils contracted. Meanwhile, Raynard was staring at her. “What did you do that would cause me to catch you?”

His tone was tough and relentless.

Gwyneth’s breath hitched as she was seized in fear. “Nothing, Mr. Fletcher. Nothing at all.”

Gwyneth’s voice was almost inaudible through her trembling lips.

As she recalled Raynard’s conversation with Darron, her panic grew worse. Her brain was nearly fried.

Raynard stared at her silently, obviously waiting for an explanation.

Gwyneth used her last strength to stand on her limp legs and lowered her head, her eyes closed. “Mr. Fletcher, I’m sorry.”

“You’re a dutiful and hard-working employee. Why do you say sorry?”

Raynard was reticent. It was rare that he complimented an employee. Yet, his praise sounded like the command for an execution in Gwyneth’s ears at the moment.

Gwyneth was racking her brain to come up with an explanation.

Janine texted again: “Say something. Does Mr. Fletcher figure out…”

Again, Janine tailed off.

But both texts had indicated Gwyneth was hiding something.

Gwyneth’s face grew paler and she was breathing rapidly.

She worked up her courage and looked up to meet Raynard’s piercing gaze. She choked, “I work a part-time job on my days off.

“What?”

Raynard arched an eyebrow, a glint of confusion in his eyes.

Gwyneth’s fingernails were biting into her palms as she forced herself to calm down.

“Mr. Fletcher, my part-time job is irrelevant to our company’s business. I swear that I’ve never damaged the interests of our company.”

Besides being Raynard’s assistant, Gwyneth was also a part-time painter of relief paintings.

In principle, the employees weren’t allowed to have a side job.

However, in Gwyneth’s opinion, having a second job was nothing in comparison to what happened that night.
