Chapter 21
Derik’s POV
She was asleep, but the stirring told me she was about to wake up again.
I thought I was going to feel torn, but I didn’t. I was going to find my mate, I knew that. But I needed Lizzy’s help to do that. And I was going to make sure, that no harm came to her in the process. After all this, I felt just as protective of this human girl as I did the first time, I sat eyes on her.
But it was going to be had, with another alpha in the pack house. Especially the way he kept looking at her like she was the enemy. I shook my head. She was just a child caught in an impossible situation! Couldn’t he see that?! And he hit her! What the fuck kind of man hit a child?
My wolf growled at the mare memory. Hadn’t his men walked in just then, I would have killed him!
But now I needed to calm down and face the face, that we needed Lizzy to tell us about the Hunter’s base. And I needed to make sure, that Alpha Vector didn’t hurt her in the process…
I closed the door behind me, and sure enough, right outside stood Alpha Vector. Looking at him, made my anger flair, but I had to remain calm.
“I know you’re angry…” I started, diving straight into the unpleasant conversation.
“You know shit!” he growled back, making me instantly see red.
“These people possibly have my mate so, don’t you dare!” I growled. Surprised, when I was realizing my grip around his throat. “But I also happen to believe that she’s not a bad person.”
I released my grip, trying to calm myself down. Picking a fight with Alpha Vector now, wasn’t going to help Mindy OR Lizzy. I needed his help to get them back. I just didn’t want him anywhere near Lizzy again.
“She’s a Hunter!” he barked back, rubbing his sore throat. My wolf grinned. Worse would serve him right!
“She was raised by them,” I defended her. “Doesn’t make her one of them.” Before he could say something stupid that only would result in his death, I continued: “She has a singular goal right now, and that is to keep Sif safe.”
I hated every single word that came out of my mouth. I hated letting him think, I was using her, and I trusted him. I wanted to kill him for hurting MY Lizzy and I wanted to personally throw him out of my land; preferably in pieces. But if he made a claim on her, his would be stronger than mine. Werewolves seldom had any compassion for Hunters.
“So we use that?”
My heart clenched, but I had to nod. I glanced up and anger amplified the regret I was feeling. Bloody bastard smirked! I had to pour every ounce of self-control into keeping my wolf from ripping his throat out.
“Yes,” I grinded between my teeth. “So far everything she’s said has been on the clock. We don’t risk her closing up now.”
“Fine,” he said pushing passed me and entered the room. I growled and followed. Sure enough, Liz was awake, but the second she saw Alpha Vector, all color disappeared from her face. Yet she grinded her teeth and stubbornly looked up at the man she was terrified of. I smirked, when I noticed Alpha Vector’s displeased expression. Being defied by a little girl. That’s my Liz, alright…
“I want Sif,” she said with a surprisingly steady voice. “I want to see her!”
“She’s safe,” Alpha Vector said and intended to take a threating step forward. Immediately I stepped in, effectively placing myself between him and Lizzy, without blocking his view of her. He sent me a glare that I ignored, concentrating on Liz, who seemed to calm down, having me blocking her from him.
“She’s where she’s supposed to be,” he finished, but didn’t take his eyes off me.
“But…”
“I’m her grandfather, Hunter,” he cut her off. I wanted to growl at him. Disrespectful bastard! “She doesn’t belong with your kind!”
My heart broke, when I was the defeat in her eyes. She was just seconds from crying again.
“Listen to me, little girl,” Alpha Vector continued victoriously. I grinded my teeth to stop the growl that was forming in my chest.
“You,” he continued, glaring down at Lizzy. “Are going to tell us everything!”
I could only smirk, when I noticed her rolling her eyes. That served him right.
