Moon-Colored Eyes Chapter 5
Well, the teams will be the same as always. His mother, Jackson and Jace against Juliet Julian and me. Leonardo choose th team you want. I warn you that we are all very competitive and do not tolerate defeat-. Dad says and shares a look of defiance with Mom. They were both the most competitive people in the world, that's why they were always on opposing teams. Your team sounds good. Leonardo says with a shrug. Great now I'll have to carry his rookie a*s while I kick my invincible mother and older brother's a*s. Just wonderful. Well in that case let's go to the forest, we'll explain the rules on the way. Dad says and we all get up from the table to leave the mansion. jackson, Julian and Jace were talking to each other, while my parents were walking hand in hand. I was walking along with Leonardo, my father asked me through the bond to tell him what was going to happen to the newest member of the fami so I had no choice but to start a conversation. Have you ever hunted before? I asked as if it was nothing and wanted to take a swing, I was a werewolf, of course I had! -Of course, you do what you have to do to eat. He answers calmly while looking around. -And what do you say in groups, have you already done it or is it your first time? I try again. A shadow passes across his eyes before he answers me. How strange. Not really, I'm a lone wolf. He says still relaxed but something in him changes as he says it. He's lying. Casiana exclaims and I believe him, there's something strange in his attitude, but I pretend to believe him so he doesn't suspect anything. Well, actually it's not much different. Our family is very competitive and that's why it's so important. The only thing we d is to hunt by teams for specific animals or things. For example last time mom's team won because they were the ones wh got a sunflower fin fish. And I know that sounds silly. But it was the middle of winter, the lakes were frozen, fish were scar and it was freezing cold. So getting any fish at all was a challenge as such. But to get one with that specific color, still car figure out how they did it. I count with admiration, I was still hurting from the last defeat but that didn't make me admire my brothers and my mother any less for that. 50, more than a hunt, it's a kind of treasure hunt. Leonardo commented and I nodded. “More or less that's the idea, we have to work as a team and we have to be fast. The rules say that the first one to bring tt prey to the house wins. Which means we can steal from the other as soon as they get it and take it ourselves. Normally w split up and two of us look for the prey while the other one spies. It's quite a strategy, this hunt is different because it's t first one Jace and I have participated in as wolves, plus the teams are uneven because you're there. It will be interesting t see how this turns out. I say with false excitement in my voice, I didn't really want to share anything with my new brother. -And what are we going to hunt? He asks curiously but 1 just shrug my shoulders. Dad always reveals it at the last second. I answer and we both continue walking in silence. We finally reach a deep part of the forest, beyond the herd clearing. The trees here are incredibly tall and so lush that the sunlight has trouble illuminating. As in previous hunts my family and I stood in a circle, with a gesture I indicated to Leonardo to imitate us. Well family, I hope you are ready for what's next. As you know this time the family hunt is a little different- Dad makes a signal to Jace, Leonardo and me- But the rules are still the same. The first one to reach the mansion with the prey wins, t losers will have to patrol the northern area for the rest of the month. My brothers and I grimace, the northern zone is the furthest away from the herd. It is also where the terrain is the most uneven, creating deep muddy pools, mosquitoes and unpleasant smells. If you weren't careful, you'd end up falling into one of those and smell like garbage for days. None of us liked to stand guard there. Obviously my parents didn't, they just rubbed it in each other's faces. Although once my mom had confessed to me to having a board with the number of victories of each one in her room. She wouldn't tell me who was winning. “The prey we're going after this afternoon is a small, common animal. Easy to recognize, but fast and elusive- We all get into position to run away, my father takes a sigh and looks us all in the eye before continuing- A rabbit..- A smirk- White color with a red tail~ The smile disappeared. That rabbit might as well not exist! Ready? Go! My father’s shout makes us all react and both teams run off in different directions. Juliet, Julian and Leonardo, you look for the rabbit while I spy on your brothers and your mother. Any clues get on the link ves dad. julian and I answer, but Leonardo just blurts out a whatever. I roll my eyes, I won't let him ruin my hunt. I run quickly scanning the ground with my eyes, I need to find burrows or hints of them. I stopped after moving a safe distance away, closed my eyes and let my sense of smell take over, a faint urine scent made me run south. There were indeed rabbits in that area, but to my misfortune there were no white rabbits with red tails. Damn. I ran again looking for a water source, it was common knowledge that wild animals in order to survive set up their homes near the resources they needed day by day. Water was life. I arrived near a small stream, and for the second time I let my sense of smell guide me through the forest. Possums, skunks, rabbits, deer, seemingly every kind of animal but the one I needed had decided to come out that day. At least two hours had passed when I was about to lose my patience, when like a revelation a white fur ball appeared in t middle of nowhere, jumping calmly. From where I was I couldn't quite see if its tail was red or brown but my heart leapt a the sight of the creature. I got into position and prepared to attack, waited for it to be absent-mindedly eating grass and pounced. The bunny obviously heard me and ran away. And by the moon I was fast, the distance worked against me and the furball started to get further and further away. I'm not going to lose this hunt. And I turned, Casiana came out and was soon on the rabbit's trail. I must admit that I underestimated the little animal. Whenever I was about to get it in my claws it would turn or dart behind a big log avoiding me. My head crashed several times and I skidded on many others. I can't believe a furball is beating us, do something human! My she-wolf calls out to me over the bond and I let out a growl. You think 1 like this situation too much, that last tree hurt more than the others put together! Hurry up! I'm coming. And I finally catch the rabbit with my snout. Blood drips from my fangs and although I don't like the metallic taste on my tongue I find myself satisfied. I trot along quietly until I realize I have no idea where I am. Again. How can you get lost twice in a row in the forest where you grew up? Why don't you be helpful and tell me where the hell I should go? 'm a she-wolf not a GPS, use your sense of smell and find your trail. Good idea. But in the end it's not a good idea, my scent is scattered in almost every direction I had to go to get this rabbit, so I don’t have a sure idea of where to go. Dad, I don't know where I am. I ry to connect through the link but there is only silence. Dad, Julian? Silence. Mom, Jace, Jackson, can anyone hear me? Nothing. Strange, the bond always works, unless we're at a considerable distance, and I couldn't have gotten that far awa or could I? MOM, DAD, JACE! someone is watching us. My head turns in all directions as Casiana's tense voice alerts me, I begin to growl under my breath, my spine bristles anc internally debate whether I should stay to find out what's going on or if I should leave. A growl sounds to my right and my decision is made. Fight, at all costs. I let go of the rabbit and bark, another growl to my left. There are more than one, they have the advantage, run human, Run! I shake my head, I'm not going anywhere. Human a*****e... A wolf jumps from my right side as an arrow is shot from my left. I duck and dodge the wolf but the arrow sticks in my side making me squeal. As best I can I shake it off and come face to face with the wolf. He is of considerable size, smaller than me but definitely bigger than an Omega, his fur is white in cole but is full of dirt, his eyes are two pools of red that look at me angrily while his canines are exposed in a threatening manner. He barks at me and I growl back. Get down! I obey my she-wolf and an arrow whizzes past my head. Before I can turn to locate the shooter the white wolf attacks me and forces me to defend myself, her muzzle seeks my paws but my claws drive her back, I release a bite to her side and tt wolf growls. linhale deeply and close my jaw tighter so as not to let it go. The faint scent of forest and chocolate I detect in its fur stuns me and makes me loosen my grip, the wolf takes advantag and lets go, its fangs catch my foreleg and pull it making me fall. I squeal loudly, at the same time another arrow sticks in my back. I start howling loudly. F**k it hurts so much. The white wolf growls and with his head ramming me to shut me up, I crash into a tree with enough force to break it. My eyesight fills with black spots and I know for sure from the burning in my side that I have something broken. I'm lying the trying to catch my breath when the wolf approaches me again. Slower and full of confidence, a shadow approaches him and I can see a, A human?, walk beside him, it's a boy, he must not be very big, his clothes are torn and dirty as is his face can't see his features, but what I do notice is the bow drawn with an arrow pointing at my face, on his back I can see a ful quiver. I growl and blink to try to clear my vision. The white wolf attacks me again and this time I hit my head on a rock. Everything is spinning, ringing in my ears, my visio blurs. Whispers I can't identify. -...She... ~..He..- -..0dor...- -..Alpha.... The two figures come closer to me and I just shriek in pain. More whispers that I don’t understand. -...Bl00d...- -..Trace.....Trap.....Trap.... Get up human if you don't want to die here. I can't. Up. And I try, but the third arrow pierces my already injured paw and I whimper. I don’t want to die here. But the last trace of hope disappears when my ears pick up a third presence. Another wolf, I immediately start screeching The third wolf is just a brown blob that I can't quite focus on. However my sense of smell identifies it perfectly. Forest, chocolate and wine. It smells delicious. MATTE. I squeal in desperation as Casiana'’s voice echoes in my head and other growls sound, then disappear and a male voice shouting replaces it. But again I am not able to understand what they say. -..ENOUgh...- -...Pain...- -..Corpse..-..Dead body... My heart skips a beat when I recognize that last word. Kill or don’t kill I won't let them kill me. I feel weaker and weaker from the lack of blood so I fill my lungs with air and use all my strength to make one last atte; to save myself. I let out the loudest howl I can, but it's not just any howl, it's a call for help. The earth beneath me vibrate from the intensity. And I feel the creatures and the three presences near me shudder. Other howls answer me from everywhere immediately and 1 know they are from my family and other members of my pac} They are closer than I thought. Before I can sing victory a blow to my face causes me to close my eyes for good, my strength drained, I don't fall into unconsciousness but I can't find the energy to try to see what's going on. A hand caresses my fur and by the scent it conveys I know it's my mate, I squeal a little, and as suddenly as I arrive the hand disappears. Just like the delicious aroma. I lie still just lying there, just breathing is an effort. I have broken bones, two arrows stuck in me, my head is throbbing ar on my side two open wounds bleed a lot. I don't know how much time passes, but I only hope that one of the attackers will finish the job and kill me. But nothing happens, everything is astonishingly quiet. Paw noises and grunts warn me of the presence of more people. Juliet! My mother’s scream makes me relax and untransform. My mother's body pulls me into her arms and carries me immediately. JULIETTE. Jackson's scream sounds nearby and I shift into my big brother's arms. Take her to the mansion. I'll comb this forest inch by inch if I have to, but I won't come back until I've killed someone. My mother's voice is deadly serious and surprisingly clear. I make an effort and half open my eyes. My mother's blurry form is the first thing I see, her face is tense and I don't need clear vision to know that her eyes are white like her wolf's at this moment. -Mom... -. She stammers and attracts the attention of both of us. Breathe my child, it's all right now, you're safe. She whispers to me but I whimper. “Mate... I say as best I can and feel my brother's arms tighten. -Did he say..? But I seem to have overstepped my bounds because I don’t hear the rest. I let myself be carried away by the darkness, fainting. Mate...
