When Love Breaks (Josephine)

Chapter 76

Chapter 76

Zayn's eyes darkened as he stared at William. He cursed the attorney for always showing up at the wrong time and getting on his nerves.

When he saw Josephine join William at the table and sign the divorce papers with a flourish, his heart tightened painfully.

What was she doing? Did she really want to go through with the divorce? He had seen the anguish flicker across her face earlier when he agreed to sign the papers. She was bound to regret her decision one day if she kept letting her pride get to her like this.

William suddenly asked, "Mr. Forbes, aren't you going to sign the papers?"

Zayn swallowed his rage. He did not spare William so much as a glance as he said, "Josephine, let's talk about this."

Josephine countered coldly. "There's nothing to talk about. You can either sign the papers now, or I'll have Nadine thrown behind bars. The choice is yours."

"Leave Nadine out of this! We're talking about our marriage here!" Zayn argued.

Josephine troze before frowning in puzzlement. "Need I remind you that you were the one who proposed this, Zayn?"

"I know, but it wasn't as if I had a choice! Listen, Josephine, I swear nothing is going on between me and Nadine. Haven't I treated you well in the three years of our marriage?"

"Of course you have," Josephine drawled. She had already grown tired of playing along with him, and the feelings she bottled up over the years finally burst. You've been nothing but nice to me. You were practically angelic" Zayn heaved a sigh of relief. "Well, I'm glad we're on the same page-"

Josephine cut him off venomously, "You were so nice as to steal my dress and my jewelry a initially booked the vessel for me.

and give them to Nadine. You even bought a yacht for her even though you

"You had the doctor I hired to keep an eye on her through the night before I could be treated. You were so generous that you remembered to bring me pancake sandwiches and creme anglaise, even if they were Nadine's leftovers!" Bringing up the past was like ripping the bandaid off a giant, gaping wound that never properly healed. Josephine was surprised she hadn't bled to death or died from a shattered heart.

"you know what, Zayn? Nadine only pulled this stunt because she was confident you would speak up for her even if she got caught!" Josephine ground out

Zayn's grimace deepened with each word that rolled off Josephine's tongue, but his anger was quickly replaced by panic, then helplessness. When he spoke again, it was with a faltering voice. "How did you know about those, Josephine? Did you keep tabs on me?" Josephine snorted as she narrowed her eyes at him in contempt. "I didn't have to do anything, Zayn. Nadine was always excited to tell me about her sweet moments with you, and keeping tabs on you would have been redundant.

"sign the papers, Zayn. I have nothing more to say to you. That I was ever married to someone like you is my greatest humiliation."

"You-"

Zayn never thought such hateful words would come from Josephine. His face was story, but he wasn't so much furious as he was guilty and anxious. He couldn't explain himself or his actions even if he tried.

How did things tum out this way? He had been so confident that he only had to put up with this mess for a while longer before he could return to a happy marriage with Josephine. How had he managed to screw things up and let them spiral out of control?

William noted Zayn's dazed state and prompted, "Mr. Forbes, I think it's best if you sign the papers. Ms. Dunn is a kind and reasonable person. She won't demand any part of your fortune as long as you divorce her, fair and square. All she wants is freedom." Unable to contain his anger any longer, Zayn roared at William, "Shut the fuck up!"

William shuddered at Zayn's outburst and quickly ducked his head. He wisely kept his mouth shut after that.
