When I Stopped Loving I Stopped Crying by Edward

Chapter 7

Chapter

Lily always seemed to have impeccable timing.

Whenever Chandler and I were alone together, some incident involving Lily would inevitably occur.

Countless times over the years, Chandler would leave me without hesitation to tend to Lily whenever such incidents arose.

During the epidemic, I had a fever nearing 40°C. Chandler gave the last antipyretic medicine in our home to Lily without a second thought.

“Yasmine, you’re healthy and can tough it out.”

“Lily has been fragile since childhood. Let’s give her the medicine as a precaution!” After that, I stopped competing or arguing. I thought that one day, when Lily married, Chandler and I might find our peace.

“Go take a look; we’ll discuss our situation later.'”

He looked at me hesitantly and said, “Let me take you to work first.”

“No need. There are plenty of cars out there. Just take one,” I replied.

Causing him to pause momentarily, as if my words struck a familiar chord–he had once said something similar to me.

Before he left, he rolled down the window and made a promise.

“Yasmine, can we video chat tonight when we’re home?”

“Sure!” I agreed.

Yet, after I finished organizing the experimental data well past midnight, he hadn’t called or messaged me.

The next day was a project seminar where cell phones were prohibited during confidential meetings.

When I emerged at noon, a colleague informed me that my desk phone had been ringing for quite some time.

As soon as I picked up the phone, Chandler called.

“Yasmine, what happened? Why didn’t you pick up the phone?”

This scenario brought back a distant memory.

In the early days of our relationship, when I was still in scientific research, I often missed his calls due to attending confidential meetings.

He used to get upset about it and insisted I answer his calls promptly.

Eventually, I switched to an administrative role because of this.

Listening to his questioning now, I no longer had the fear of disappointing him that I once did.

I had a morning meeting without my phone. What’s up?”

The conversation now felt formal and distant, like official business.

He let out a sigh of relief.

“It’s nothing serious. I was just worried you were ignoring me.”

“Lily had a high fever last night. I was busy taking care of her and forgot about our video chat.”

“Oh, it’s fine. I didn’t wait long before going to bed.”

Upon hearing my response, he hesitated briefly.

“Aren’t you upset?”

“Why should I be? You two grew up together. It’s natural for an older brother to look after his younger sister.”
