Chapter 6
Chapter 6
I fell silent for a moment. “You said you didn’t want others to know about our relationship.”
He looked momentarily crestfallen, then gestured for me to walk with him.
He walked ahead, and I followed in silence.
“Yasmine, come this way. Why are you walking behind?”
I looked up, surprised.
He was indicating the inside of the sidewalk,
where Lily usually walked.
When Chandler and I went out, we seldom had time alone; Lily often accompanied
- us.
He claimed she was younger and safer walking on the inside.
But he forgot I was the same age as Lily.
He said I could walk on his left side, so I did. Unfortunately, I was hit by a speeding electric bike and injured my arm.
I made a fuss about it.
Lily, annoyed, walked to his left side. “Yasmine is too petty. How about I walk on the left side?”
The only time I walked on the inside, he was afraid passing vehicles might hit Lily, so he squeezed towards me until he pushed me into the greenbelts.
I stepped back, silently fell behind, and watched their backs as they chatted and laughed.
From then on, being a step behind became routine.
“I’m used to it. Let’s just go.”
But he turned stubbornly, took my hand, and walked side by side with me.
He stole glances occasionally, “Yasmine, do you have any thoughts about me?”
“No, not really.”
“But you…”
Before he could finish, his phone rang urgently.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw “LL” on the screen.
It was Lily calling.
She coined this abbreviation herself and proudly showed it to me in private.
“Yasmine, do you know why it was changed like this? LL can also stand for Love Lily!”
I shared what she said with Chandler, but he accused me of making it up.
Chapter 6
“Are you so eager for me to have an affair with her to confirm your suspicions?”
Chandler hung up and tried to return to our previous conversation.
But the phone rang again.
“Go ahead. It might be important.”
He looked at me gratefully, then turned away as if to take the call privately. Suddenly, he paused, seeming to recall something.
Instead of moving away, he answered and activated the speakerphone.
Lily’s delicate, tearful voice filled the air.
“Brother, I have a fever. Can you come and see me?”
Glancing at me briefly, Chandler’s tone softened, a manner he rarely used with me.
“I remember you have some fever medicine at home. Take it according to the instructions.”
“The medicine is expired. Can you buy me some? I feel dizzy, ah…”
The call abruptly ended with a scream.
“She’s still young. Let’s keep going. She needs to learn to be independent,” he said.
However, he was evidently distracted, repeatedly glancing at his phone every minute.
