Chapter 102 What Should I Do Now
Charles was not the type to be controlled by anyone- let alone any woman.
Even though Dorothy was aware of this, she could be very erratic at times.
"Yes, Dad, I want to know." Throwing her arms around his neck, Dorothy mustered her sweetest voice, enough to persuade her father.
"Okay, let me ask others." Evidently, her charms worked as Drew took out his phone and dialed Charles' assistant.
If Charles didn't go to the company, then his assistant probably knew where he was.
As a busy and influential businessman, he hired six assistants who were responsible for different things. And every time, he'd be occupied with other matters, he'd assign tasks to those six. Some of them were in charge of handling domestic issues, others dealt with overseas concerns, while the rest managed office affairs.
This particular assistant who Drew just called was Mr. Yang, who was in charge of domestic affairs for Charles.
However, quite surprisingly, even he didn't know where Charles had gone last night.
And although Drew found it slightly odd too, he couldn't lie to his daughter-not when her tears were on the verge of falling.
He tried to sport a calm expression for some time, but he couldn't bear to see his daughter crying, so he pleaded with Mr. Yang to inquire about it.
So after hanging up the phone, the assistant called Jay and asked about Charles' plans last night, saying that he couldn't get hold of him.
Because Jay trusted Charles' assistant, he told him exactly what happened last night.
"It's Nancy, isn't it? Dad, what should I do? If Charles really falls in love with her, then what should I do, daddy?" Dorothy sounded desperate as she cried to her father. Helpless, Drew could only stare at his for a while before summoning his breath and saying, "A woman should never show too much jealousy. Men don't like those types of women."
"But what should I do now?" Dorothy sobbed in a low voice, covering her face with both of her hands.
"You have to visit Nancy. Buy a bouquet of flowers and be polite," Drew suggested as he patted his daughter's head for comfort.
"I'm going to visit Nancy?" From the tone of her voice, it was evident that Dorothy was unwilling to do this.
"Charles is with her, remember? You have to keep your enemies close. Just make it look like you're vising her."
After hearing such a reasonable suggestion, Dorothy clenched her teeth and muttered angrily, "Alright! Alright! I'll go!"
Just like her father suggested, Dorothy bought the flowers and went straight to the sanatorium. Although she bore a gloomy face all the way there, she calmed herself and plastered a fake smile before getting out of the car.
It's very kind of you, Miss Zhuang," Nancy expressed politely, holding the flowers Dorothy brought.
"It's nothing. We are a family." A playful smile etched on Dorothy's lips as she said those words. But little did Nancy know, the former clenched her fists tightly while hiding them behind her.
She was obviously restraining herself from doing anything reckless that might either offend or displease Charles. "Dorothy, you didn't have to buy anything." Behind Nancy was Charles, who spoke with a cold voice.
Even the indifference in his tone did not escape Dorothy's ears. He really seemed very different now-much to her dismay. She had never heard him spoke so softly or even sport such a gentle look on his face. There was just something so distinct with how he looked at Nancy.
"You two talk. I'm going to buy breakfast." Feeling the awkwardness in the room, Nancy decided to go out quickly and escape the secondhand embarrassment.
"Alright. Be careful and don't take too long," Charles reminded with a gentle voice that seemed foreign to Dorothy.
"Okay." Without looking back, Nancy hurried out and finally left the two alone.
As soon as she was outside, she had to stop to calm herself. Her heart was beating too fast, and she knew how flustered she was at that moment.
Although Charles had said that calmly, it was easy for other people to misinterpret him. But more than that, it was apparent he acted like a normal husband would- and even in front of Dorothy! "Charles, how is your leg?" With only the two of them now, Dorothy sat beside him, touching the wound on his leg to check on it.
"I'm feeling much better now. Thank you for your concern," said Charles with an evident frown.
Then, without trying to get noticed, he moved his leg away from Dorothy.
'What is he hiding from me?
Why is he like this now? He is so different to me now!'
Dorothy could only scream in her heart, afraid that if she was to ask him, his honest answer would only hurt her. So instead, she just kept mum.
And the two fell on an awkward silence, all the while Nancy had left to buy food. It was as if the two had never shared any memories before and looked like strangers-even worse than strangers.
When Nancy returned, she was welcomed by a very uncomfortable situation. Charles was reading files on one side while Dorothy was staring at him on the other side.
"Miss Ning, you're back! And you've bought a lot of delicious food!" Dorothy rose to her seat and greeted with an excited tone, obviously relieved that she could get out of that embarrassing moment. Nancy raised the packed food in her hand and said, "Miss Zhuang, would you like to eat with us?"
"No, thanks. I've already eaten." Although Dorothy sported a smile, she felt disgusted just by looking at the food in her hands.
But she remembered what her father had told her: she had to be polite and befriend Nancy.
"Well...alright," Nancy replied, putting down the packed breakfast on the countertop. Then she gazed at Charles and said, "Mr. Fu, wash your hands and eat."
Because Dorothy was present, Nancy felt shy to call Charles with his first name, so she just addressed him with formality. And this sudden change in her treatment sent his brows tightly knitting out of confusion.
"Wash them for me," said Charles, deliberately stretching out his hands in front of Nancy.
Watching the two exchange remarks, Dorothy couldn't help but feel a sudden burst of anger deep inside her. She knew it was highly driven by jealousy and all she could do was bite her lips to control herself. 'Can't you wash your hands yourself?' she thought to herself, quite surprised that Charles wanted to be babied in front of Dorothy. "You..." Nancy tried to say something, but she struggled to find the right words But before she could speak her words, Charles added, "My leg is injured, and I can't walk."
At this point, Nancy was left speechless. But she couldn't argue further since Charles made quite a reasonable point.
So, she got him some water and helped wash his hands.
Then she poured out the water and used a towel to dry his hands.
The joyful expression on his face couldn't hide how elated he was. Even when Charles took the packed food, he was all smiles. "This is very delicious. It's just what I wanted," he muttered while eating. "Have more if you like." Nancy poured a cup of soybean milk for him.
While those two enjoyed their breakfast, Dorothy was left in utter disbelief on the couch.
Charles was a complete neat freak, and he had never eaten take-out food. But now, he was eating like there was no tomorrow, even talking while his mouth was half-full.
Suddenly, it dawned on her that this man, who was happily sharing a meal with another woman, was not the same man she knew. He was so much different now.
In the past, Charles looked like a haughty and arrogant god, someone who was worshipped by a lot of women. But now, he seemed like any ordinary man with flesh and blood.
As she stared at the two, Dorothy realized she couldn't stay here anymore. So immediately, she stood up and bid them farewell. "Charles, I'm going to the company to familiarize myself with the business. I'll be heading now."
"Okay, be careful and drive slowly on the road," he responded while taking one big gulp. Then he lowered his head and continued to munch on his food.
"Well, if there is anything that I don't understand about the business, I might have to bother you. You have to help me out, okay?" Dorothy said modestly, obviously just trying to find a way to spend time with him.
"Yes. if you have any question, just ask me," Charles answered casually without looking at her. He was just so immersed in his meal.
"Okay, thank you. "Goodbye, Miss Ning," Dorothy uttered before walking to the door.
"Bye." With a short reply, Nancy sent her out.
"Miss Ning, please take good care of Charles," Dorothy expressed politely as she turned to intently look at her.
"Yes. It's my duty." Even though Nancy met her gaze with equal intensity, her voice was painted with sheer indifference.
Dorothy just ignored her last words and instead turned around and left without saying anything.
But before she could completely turn around, her envious expression didn't escape Nancy's sight.
For a moment, she was lost as to why Dorothy would feel that way when for Nancy, the latter seemed to be a better match for Charles than her.
And although she was dying to know who Charles would choose, Nancy didn't dare to ask him directly.
So after Dorothy left and they were done with their breakfast, Nancy chose to visit her mother rather than with Charles while she was filled with those thoughts. "Have a rest, Charles," she suggested, looking at his slightly red eyes.
"No, I'm going to a bidding event today. You stay here and look after your mother. I'll be back as soon as possible," Charles said, standing up.
"Hey! What about your leg?" Surprised at how he managed to stand by himself, Nancy felt a slight panic and worry.
