Chapter 41

-Nathan’s POV-

In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a series of events that will lead the world to its demise, before rising anew. One of the events talks about Fenrir, a monstrous wolf who swallowed Odin and was later killed by Vidar, Odin’s son. Although tales of Fenrir travelled far and wide, little is known about Vidar. But just as it was foretold in the mythology, Fenrir was struggling in his battle with Vidar.

It took all I had to create opportunities for Fenrir to strike at Vidar. Contrary to his frail look, his kicks are swift and deadly. Every time he slammed his foot onto the reinforced concrete floor, the floor would dent from the force. Fenrir was engaging him in close combat, with my assistance, but even then the situation was pretty grim. My wind is unable to stop him completely, but I can slow him down by creating air resistance. Using wind blades in this situation would be too risky as I might hit Fenrir.

“I’ll take care of you first!” Vidar dashed over towards me, finally irritated at the stalemate. Fenrir sprinted after him, but Vidar was a tad bit faster. Vidar swung his leg hard. Even though I manage to conjure a wall of wind, Vidar simply tore through it and slammed right into my side. My bones crunched and I was thrown hard into a wall, coughing out blood from the impact. I heaved in pain when I felt my broken ribs starting to repair themselves.

Fenrir let out a howl of fury and swung his claw at Vidar, but Vidar quickly dodged and slammed his fist into Fenrir’s abdomen. Fenrir coughed in pain. Vidar grabbed him by the head and slammed him to the ground. Without my assistance, Vidar was much faster than Fenrir.

“You couldn’t win me in the past, what makes you think you can win now?” Vidar chided menacingly. It is hard to believe that he was part of the God faction that pushed back evil. I picked myself up and launched several wind blades in his direction. Unbothered, Vidar simply raised his hand. With a simple flick, all my wind blades dissipated.

Vidar conjured a blood-stained blade from mid-air. I summoned my wind and quickly propelled myself forward. I can’t let my mate die like this. I slammed hard into Vidar and stood over Fenrir protectively. Blood was dripping from his head, and he was unconscious. I placed my palm gently on his forehead, gathering the power granted to me by Aceso. A sharp pain running down my leg quickly told me that I am successful in healing the damage. Fenrir winced from imaginary pain and quickly realized what happened.

“Are you okay?” He asked guiltily. I gave him a shaky smile but gasped in pain when I tried to move my leg but the backlash was hurting badly. Vidar roared furiously and charged toward us, bringing his sword down on us. Fenrir immediately flipped over, covering his body over mine.

“NO!” I screamed. I tried to flip him back, but he pressed himself firmly onto me. I kicked and flailed, ignoring the pain in my leg. Why is he covering for me? I can recover from any damage it should be me shielding him. I closed my eyes and wait for the inevitable. I can’t lose another mate again. I conjured the shield that Kalen gave me, layering it with my own wind, hoping that it would be enough. Unfortunately, the sword of the gods simply sliced through it like a hot knife slicing through butter. There was nothing else I could do in my despair, I shut my eyes and waited for the inevitable.

Except, it never came. A swirl of air repelled the sword, tossing the god into the far end of the room.

I swear, you always seem to be in trouble when I’m not here. Gale laughed in my head. The familiar voice brought tears to my eyes.

How are you… I thought…

I was never dead you idiot. Well, you could say that I was almost dead. It was pretty difficult keeping you safe while recovering from all that damage from the rejection. Even for someone as great as me, I needed some time for my soul to recover again. Gale simply smiled and waved it off. I laughed in my head. I can’t believe that after all this time, my wolf was alive.

Does that mean you’re back for good?

Yup, good and new. Now then, let me take care of this.

I let Gale take control of my body. A furry tail and furry ears popped out. Fenrir got up instantly when he felt a new connection. You could see the excitement in his icy blue eyes.

“What did you do!” Vidar growled angrily.

“Nice to meet you too,” Gale smirked.

“There is no way I, of all people, will be deflected by a mere wind!”

“Well, you obviously haven’t met me.”

Vidar pushed himself off the ground. He launched his sword at us and rushed forward. Gale raised his hand and conjured his folding fan, the one I left back at the packhouse. With a simple flick, a gush of wind erupted and knocked Vidar away, his sword flailing aimlessly in the air and impaling into a wall.

“Impossible! There is no way mere dress-up can make you this strong!”

“Dude, have you not watched magical girls or power rangers?”

“What the fuck are you talking about!” Vidar screamed like a mad man.

“And 3…2…1…” A loud resounding snap resonated throughout the building, followed with the sound of shattering. It was as if all the glass windows shattered at once. The miserable aura was gone in an instant. She did it! Kalen managed to do a Dispel.

“Now then.” Gale pointed the fan at Vidar. With a swish and flick, ropes of wind wrapped themselves around Vidar. Vidar’s face went red, Fenrir let out a deep annoyed growl, and I don’t blame him. Gale clapped happily as he bound Vidar in a…tempting position. Not one that is family-friendly. Fenrir slipped behind us and picked up Gale in his arms. Gale’s tail, despite the scowl on his face, was swishing back and forth happily. Fenrir immediately pulled Gale into a hug, nuzzling his face and letting out a deeply satisfying growl. Gale whined a little but hugged back. He loved the attention he was getting from his mate, finally.

“I will kill you all! Let me out of this humiliation! At once!” Vidar screamed at them, but it was to no avail, Gale and Fenrir were pretty much in their own world.

“Oh? So, you do know it is humiliating.” Ray piped. Gale and Fenrir immediately jumped and shrank back, into the mental space that is. Alex and I stumbled at the sudden takeover, accidentally tripping and crashing onto him. We laughed at our situation, which seemed to piss off Mr. I’m-so-important.

“Enough Vidar! You are disgracing the Norse Gods!” An ethereal voice harshly reprimanded.

“M…Mother? What are you doing here?” Vidar stuttered. We, including Hastie and Druid who were supporting Ray, watched in horror as the beauty stalked down the mess of the building with the fury of a mama bear.

“What am I doing here?! Did you forget about our rule not to interfere! You even went as far as to isolate a space! And what are you doing lying in that position! I did not raise you to be like this! This is why I told you to go out with Thor more often, instead of just sitting around messing with blood and other liquids. Oh, your father is going to be so mad when he hears this!” The mother of the god walked over and dragged Vidar by his ears. Before tossing him into a portal she conjured, yelled: “And how dare you block my phone number!”

“My name is Gríðr. I am the mother of Víðarr, better known as Vidar. I am very, very sorry that we had to put you through the idiocy of my son. I will make sure that he does not repeat such nonsense again.” She apologized, giving us a curt bow before disappearing past the portal.

“So, what just happened?” Hastie asked quizzically. We all looked at each other but none of us could give an answer.

“We won, I guess?” Alex lamented. I hope he isn’t upset that he can’t hold his ground against Vidar. We took the lift, which is somehow still in perfect condition, down to the lobby. When the lift door opened, we were greeted by the sight of a fuming Kalen and a defeated Philip.

“What happened here?” Ray asked.

“What happened? Your mum dispelled a barrier, of the gods, singlehandedly. What the hell did she eat to be able to do that!” Philip sighed exasperatedly. “No matter how strong you are, a dispel isn’t supposed to be able to break a god’s barrier!”

“And like I’ve said! That was an original spell I came up with!” Kalen argued.

“That still doesn’t explain how you got enough power to shatter it!”

We laughed while they continue to argue back and forth. That was until I decided to take a closer look and noticed something off.

“Has anyone found Terui?”
