Chapter 32: The Aftermath
Jasper appeared out of nowhere and healed Daniel. There was no time for explanations. We jumped in the car in the back alley and drove off. Daniel was driving, we told him to circle neighborhoods to make sure we weren’t being followed.
Was somebody hunting angels? They’d only tried to kill Daniel and not Joey but he was the one who wrote the book about us. It was confusing. I know books aren’t meant to be taken at face value but they make people think and thinking can lead to things.
This made no sense. What was going on? What possibly could that book reveal that wouldn’t have already happened?
Once we were sure nobody was following us we returned to Joey and Daniel’s house. I texted Grace that we were fine so our phones would stop buzzing. I wonder if any of this would end up on the news it surely would if anyone saw Jasper heal Daniel. More problems, as if we didn’t have enough.
As soon as we stepped inside their house I was overcome with a headache and flashing visions.
Great, now what?
My vision went black.
When color finally came in I was looking at a desert wasteland. The earth was cracked and dying. I turned around and saw a forest but you could tell it was slowly dying. The edge grass was wheat colored and the air was dry.
What? What had happened? Where was I? I thought the apocalypse was our future. This world looked dead. Unrecoverable.
Where was everyone? Gabriel appeared then. He held my hand gently staring out at whatever wasteland was left of our Earth.
Toby appeared a few steps behind us. He looked sad. Daniel hung back watching me and Gabriel. Gabriel subconsciously released my hand. Jasper was somewhere, I could feel him watching.
I was confused, what had happened to the Earth? There was no explanation or turning point just that scene.
We’re we too late. Was our future set in stone now? Was the world going to end?
Did we not get the chance to change it again?
When I came to I was on the floor in the hallway of Joey and Daniel’s house. I didn’t move, I just lay there, confused and scared.
Was there even a point to living anymore if the end was coming no matter what?
“Nathan,” Gabriel spoke nervously.
I still didn’t move. I felt dead. Like someone hard stripped me of my powers.
“It’s silent,” Gabriel whispered with wonder.
I guess after having been able to read minds for the majority of his life he would notice the silence.
“Joey,” Daniel called.
I turned my head. Joey was on the floor with Daniel and Jasper over him.
