Chapter Chapter Thirty-Two
I shifted to my wolf the second that I left my Luna. My wolf urged for us to turn back and keep her in our embrace, but I knew this was good for her.
Seeing her all week so closed off and heartbroken, completely broke me. I wanted to take her away from the pain, take her away from here. But we were the leaders of this pack, and the only thing that I could do was comfort her.
When I had first told her about the loss of our pup, after she had woken up from the accident, she had screamed and cried for hours. She had claimed that the pup died because of her ignorance and not drinking enough fluid.
The memory pained me and I almost turned back around to go find her, but I forced myself to keep moving.
My mother was still in our territory, and I made sure she remained until I had a chance to speak with her. I didn't tell Lyra that I was going to go speak with her because she was only now appearing better, actually agreeing to go for a run with Jaxon, when she had rejected everything else all week.
In the past week, I had held back from going to see my mother because Lyra had been my priority. Making sure my Luna was okay was my biggest concern. And now that she had taken up on Jaxon's offer, I felt that she was slowly easing back to her life again after such a traumatic experience.
I snapped out of my daze once I reached the small cottage that belonged to my mother. Quickly, I shifted back to my human form and grabbed a pair of shorts from the cabinet next to the house.
Without knocking, I burst through the door, finding the woman by the window with a cup of tea in her hand.
"Son, you're here," she said, pursing her lips. "Come, take a seat."
Narrowing my eyes at her, I shut the door behind me before doing as instructed. "My Luna almost died last week," I snarled, trying to keep my wolf at bay.
My mother swallowed hard, before placing the cup down on to the coffee table. "I am aware," she stated, her eyes hard. "How is she doing?"
I scoffed. "Don't act like you care about her."
My mother's brows furrowed, she gaped at me in shock. "What? Alexander, of course, I care!"
Clenching my jaw, I blurted, "Yeah? Is that why you have not bothered to visit her even once?"
The woman blinked, dumbfounded. "I suppose, I should have visited," she agreed, clearing her throat. "I did not want to make her feel uncomfortable."
Sighing, I ran a hand over my face before I turned my focus back on her. "I am not here to speak about my Luna," I told her, sternly. "I am here to hear the truth from you. You are going to tell me everything."
My mother narrowed her eyes at me. "Tell you what exactly?"
"Whatever the hell that happened that night," I snapped. "I am aware that you played a big role on that day."
"Now, Alexander—"
"You will tell me the truth," I interjected, using my Alpha tone, making my mother completely cower back in shock. "Mother, please, I have dealt with enough."
"I suppose," she commented in agreement. "Before I can tell you, I need you to know that I did what I did for you and because I was worried about you."
I raised a brow, not quite catching on to her words. "What are you saying?"
My mother swallowed hard. "That night," she said, her voice hard. "You had just turned eighteen, and I was concerned because you hadn't found your mate. I lost your father, I didn't want you to endure the pain that I was feeling."
My wolf growled at her words. "Not all wolves find their mates at eighteen, you know that."
She nodded. "In hindsight, yes," she agreed, her brows furrowed. "I wish I had thought more clearly back then."
I narrowed my eyes at her, wondering where she was headed with this. I was just hoping it wasn't as bad as my wolf was making it out to be.
The last thing that I wanted to do on top of the mess, was to hurt my mother. And that was a possibility with how furious my wolf was with her.
"Jessica was a good wolf for the most part," my mother commented, mentioning the she-wolf that was now dead. "Her mother was adamant on her finding a good wolf, she hadn't found her mate either. And of course, there was you."
"Mother," I said, warningly, placing the pieces together and felt my canines dig in to my lip.
"I didn't mean to, Alexander," she cried, throwing her hand up in the air, exasperatedly. "I was mourning your father, and I couldn't watch you without a mate."
"What did you do?" I snarled, my voice deeper and harsher than I could control.
My mother glanced at me warily. "Jessica said she wanted you, and asked for my permission."
I scoffed. "Permission?" I repeated, hardly believing my ears. "You gave her permission to intoxicate and have her way with me?"
My outburst threw my mother off, and she gazed at me with panicked eyes, her mouth hung open.
"Alexander," she said, lowly, trying to remain calm. "I did not know she was going to do that."
I pulled myself off of the sofa, and yelled, "You gave her the fucking green light to go ahead!"
The woman gasped lowly, raising herself off of the sofa. "She told me the day after what she had done," she quickly elaborated. "Son, I can promise you, I had no awareness of the incident during the time."
I ran a hand through my hair in frustration, trying to keep my wolf calm.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, my voice hard and low, as I turned to glare at her. "Why didn't you fucking tell me that day when I thought I was going completely insane? You watched me lose myself, and not once did you tell me that you knew!"
"I should have told you," she chimed in. "I was wrong. I apologise, but when she told me she was expecting your pup..."
My brows twitched. "You believed her?"
"Of course, I believed her! Why wouldn't I?" my mother retorted.
I chuckled, humourlessly. "That pup is not mine," I spewed.
"Alexander, do not be absurd," she intervened, glancing at me as if I had completely lost the plot. "Of course, the pup is yours."
"How could you be so sure that the pup is mine?" I asked her, completely dumbfounded by how ridiculous my mother was being.
"Because Kai looks like you, exactly like you," my mother cried, tears now springing to her eyes.
"The DNA test that I requested confirmed that the pup was not mine," I snapped, my voice hard and cold. "Mother, forgive me but I did not realise you were this gullible."
My mother appeared furious at my words, her body physically shaking. For a mere second, I thought she was going to shift.
Anger coursed through her body, she tensed her jaw before spewing, "That bitch claimed she injected your sperm in to herself. Explain that!"
My brows rose at her words, and I almost lost my balance as the words registered. I didn't even realise that was a possibility, or a thing, to inject ones sperm in order to conceive. A loud growl escaped my lips, indicating how frustrated my wolf was.
I glared at my mother, feeling anger spread through every tissue in my body. The she-wolf not only had taken advantage of me, but she had tried to get a pup out of that night.
That wasn't even the sickening part, the fact that I had dealt with that night alone, thinking no one else was aware, but my mother had known all along.
She had given Jessica the green light to take advantage of me, and she had watched me completely lose myself in the first few weeks after that night.
Yet, she had just watched me suffer. She had kept that night a secret, selfishly, only now, four years later was she telling me.
Why?
"Why?"
