Chapter 38
In the parking lot of the Lockwood Group, Mason turned off the engine. Sitting in the car, he pondered for a moment and decided to call Zoe.
Zoe refused to answer.
Mason did not persist in making more calls. He leaned back on the leather seat and quietly lit a cigarette, contemplating whether Zoe was upset because of his rough treatment last night or because he left abruptly in the middle of the night. Zoe must have heard Ava's words on the phone. With one hand gripping his phone, he wondered if he should comfort her or perhaps try to placate her.
However, this thought lingered briefly before he brushed it off.
Such lovey-dovey actions were not suitable for him and Zoe. He never loved Zoe in the past, not now, and not in the future.
As he put away his phone, Ava approached and opened the car door for him. Having not slept all night, Ava was still full of energy. She had always been a hard worker, a trait that Mason admired, so he kept her around even after she crossed some boundaries.
Entering the elevator, Ava began to report the schedule. Mason suddenly interrupted her, calmly saying, "Clear your schedule for Thursday night. Mrs. Rosemary, the wife of the chairman of the Abbott Group, is hosting a banquet. You'll accompany me to the banquet, and the company will reimburse the attire expenses. You should be aware of the importance of the Abbott Group's project. Don't mess it up.”
He spoke for a while before Ava regained her composure. She could not believe it.
"Mr. Mason, do you want me to accompany you to Mrs. Rosemary's banquet?”
"Is there a problem?”
"No, none!" Ava quickly denied it, trying to sound very professional. "Mr. Mason, rest assured, I will definitely perform well to secure the project for you at the banquet.”
Mason did not acknowledge this as he walked out of the elevator.
Inside the elevator, Ava, facing the mirror, adjusted her appearance. She gazed at her slender figure and dignified face, unable to help but think, It's usually the wife that will be the plus one. Yet, Mr. Mason chose to bring me. Doesn't that mean I am more important to him than his wife?"
It seemed like she had overestimated Zoe.
In Mason's heart, Zoe, the so-called Mrs. Lockwood, was worthless.
For this event, Ava put in a lot of effort. After several days of selection, she finally chose a branded dress. It was sexy yet sophisticated, and the white color matched Mason's black suit.
After admiring herself in the mirror for a long time, Ava gently stroked the dress. "I'll take this one.” Even at the price of ten thousand dollars, she swiped her card without hesitation. The store manager said politely, "We will keep this dress safe for you, and you can come to pick it up before the banquet.”
Ava nodded reservedly.
Just as she was about to leave, her phone rang. It was Mason calling.
Mason instructed her in a calm tone, "Mrs. Rosemary wants Zoe to go there early to help. I recommended you to her. Note down the address and contact Mrs. Rosemary.”
Ava was stunned.
Soon after, her heart started beating faster.
In that instant, she felt that she was the true Mrs. Lockwood.
On the other end, Mason hung up the phone.
Carrying a golf club, he was about to walk toward the gathering crowd in the distance when a faint voice came from behind.
"Mason!"
Mason turned to see Gregory.
Evidently, Gregory had overheard Mason's call. He raised his chin and quipped, "Why not let Zoe go? Are you afraid of how people may look at her?"
